6 practical uses for a door open sensor with relay output

A magnetic door sensor with a 230 V relay can do much more than trigger an alarm. Here are practical ways shops, homes and businesses use one, and what to know before installing it.

BTREE magnetic door open sensor with relay module

A door sensor is one of the simplest pieces of automation you can install. A magnet on the door and a sensor on the frame detect whether the door is open or closed. Add a relay output, and that simple signal can switch a light, a buzzer, a siren or another device.

The BTREE Magnetic Door Open Sensor with Relay works directly on 230 V AC with a 5 A relay, so it can switch standard Indian appliances and loads up to that rating.

1. A simple shop or office entry alert

Connect a buzzer or bell to the relay, and it sounds whenever the door opens. Shopkeepers working in a back room know immediately when a customer walks in.

2. Automatic lights for storerooms and cupboards

Open the door and the light comes on; close it and the light goes off. This is useful for storerooms, wardrobes, pantries and electrical rooms, where people often forget to switch the light off.

3. Cold rooms and freezer doors

A door left open on a cold room or freezer wastes power and can spoil stock. The sensor can switch on a warning light or buzzer so staff notice and close it.

4. Night-time security for homes and shops

Connect a siren or hooter to the relay. If a door or shutter opens when it should not, the alarm sounds. BTREE also supplies hooters and complete alarm panels for larger security systems.

5. Safety for children and elderly family members

Fit the sensor to a main door, balcony door or gate to know when it has been opened, for example if a young child or an elderly person with dementia tries to go outside alone at night.

6. Machine and cabinet safety interlocks

In workshops and small factories, the sensor can indicate or control what happens when a machine guard or electrical cabinet is opened. Use it as an indication or an extra layer of protection, alongside the safety devices required for the machine.

What is in the box

  • The magnetic sensor unit and magnet
  • The relay module
  • An installation guide with a wiring diagram

Before you install

  • Use a qualified electrician. The relay works on 230 V mains power, which is dangerous if wired incorrectly.
  • Stay within the 5 A rating. For larger loads, the relay can switch a contactor, which then switches the load.
  • Align the magnet and sensor as shown in the guide. A small gap is fine, but too much and the sensor will read the door as open.
  • Protect it from water if it is used outdoors or near a wash area.
